Our Daughters' Heartbreak

Yes, we told them. And it was very sad.

We were at the DBacks game today and this entire weekend is devoted to honoring Gonzo and saying goodbye to him. So we figured, it would be best for the girls to know that Counsel and Gonzo wouldn't be back next year so they could enjoy the last two games with them. So here goes the conversation...

Me "Girls, I have some news to tell you. Next year two of our players won't be playing on the DBacks anymore. Craig Counsel and Gonzo"
Katie - Stunned Silence
Ellie - "Is Gonzo going to play for the Mets?"
Me "probably not"
Ellie - unstoppable crying for 5 minutes

finally she stops crying. "I want him to play for the Dbacks"
Me "I know sweetie, but this happens in baseball, sometimes our favorite players have to go to other teams"
Ellie "But I don't want him to leave" followed by 3 minutes of unstopable crying

The next time Gonzo is up, Ellie nearly drops her entire lunch on the floor as she jumps up to clap for him. "I'll miss you Gonzo!!!"

Katie seems to be handling the news ok. Her new boy, Stephen Drew hit a homerun this afternoon so we were happy about that. Plus the girls got to run the bases this afternoon! They love that. Ellie actually slid into first base... well, she fell on it, but you know.

tomorrow is the last game of the season hopefully there won't be too many tears.... and maybe we can even win a game!
